A new visitor experience opening late summer 2026.
After 15 years, one of WWT London's most-loved spaces has been transformed.
Originally designed by the late award-winning landscape architect Dr Nigel Dunnett and opened in 2011, the Rain Garden has inspired thousands of visitors to discover how gardens can save water and support wildlife.
Now, thanks to funding from BNP Paribas Asset Management through their Empowering Sustainable Futures programme, the Rain Garden has been re-imagined for a new generation.
Opening from the week commencing 24 August 2026, the refreshed space will open in time for WWT’s 80th anniversary celebrations and Wetlands Where You Live campaign.
Why rain gardens matter
As heavy rainfall becomes more frequent and intense, rain gardens have never been more important.
Instead of allowing rainwater to rush straight into drains, rain gardens capture it where it falls, slowing the flow and allowing it to soak naturally into the ground. This helps reduce flooding, improves water quality and creates valuable habitat for wildlife.
Our Rain Garden brings these ideas to life, showing how simple changes can make a big difference for people and nature.
A sensory experience for all
Whether you're visiting with family, exploring on your own, or bringing a school group - there's plenty to discover.
As you wander through the garden, you'll find:
- Beautiful planting designed to thrive on rainwater alone.
- A green roof and cascading water tanks.
- Interactive interpretation explaining how Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) help reduce flooding and improve urban environments.
- A map showcasing SuDS projects across London.
- Colourful murals, sensory experiences and opportunities to share your own thoughts about rain.
- One very talkative water butt! Push the button to hear practical water-saving tips and cheeky one-liners from WWT Vice President, David Lindo. "The name's Butt. Water Butt."
- A submerged iconic red London telephone box.
