Warden walks and Bewick's sightings
The warden walks are proving a hugh success at getting visitors closer to the brown hares out on Lady Fen, today the afternoon group managed to get within 40 yards of 2 hares huddled on the ground trying to shelter from the rain. Thankfully the forecast for the next week is overcast but dry so they should be more enjoyable. The group also saw a flock of curlew come in to land on the splashes of water and flocks of lapwing.
Just before the 3.30pm swan feed a flock of 200-300 Bewick's flew onto the reserve directly across from the main observatory, most likely after being disturbed from a field they were feeding on. There were quite a few family groups with thier distinctive 'sooty' grey cygnets and an individual with an identification neck collar numbered 026E. We are in the process of looking up the swans history with our team at Slimbridge and will report any history for this swan in a future post. unfortunately the afternoon was too overcast to get a decent photo of the swan in question.
