World Migratory Bird Day

This weekend is World Migratory Bird Day it is an annual awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the protection of migratory birds and their habitats.

Highlights today include:

Great white egret - flew past the main observatory

110 swifts over Churchman's wood (seen from Reedbed hide)
58 avocets
2 pied wagtail nests (1 on the bridge and 1 in Lyle hide)
2 little ringed plovers (main observatory)
10 house martin nests
Garganey - Lyle Hide

Photo: There are nests everywhere at WWT Welney at the moment! This is a pied wagtail nest on the bridge. How many chicks can you count? This nest has been recorded and the information sent off to the British Trust for Ornithology Nest Record Scheme, which gathers vital information on the breeding success of Britain's birds by asking volunteers to find and follow the progress of individual birds' nests.
