Recent Sightings (27th-20th June)

Millennium Wetlands

Ducklings galore at the moment! With broods of Pochard, Gadwall, Moorhen, Coot, Tufted Duck and Mallard all being seen on Deep Water Lake alongside the Black-Headed Gull chicks. A Mediterranean Gull was seen this week. Also Cormorants are starting to return from breeding areas, with 6 enjoying the heat and the supply of fish the lake has to offer. Duck counts include 14 Gadwall, 14 Mallard, 2 Teal, 2 Pochard, 6 Tufted Duck and 16 Shelduck. Black-Tailed Godwit numbers tallied to 240 on 18th.

 

British Steel Hide

No counts during high tides have recently been carried out. However, birds seen out on the coast include 1 Shoveler, 38 Lapwing, a Sparowhawk, 15 Starling, 4 Shelduck, 22 Lesser Black-Backed Gull and 2 Cormorant. There have also been 6 fledged Black-Headed Gull using this area and a Grey Heron. A Yellow-Legged Gull was seen on 28th.

 

Other Wildlife

A Golden-Ringed Dragonfly was seen on the reserve on 28th. Also look out for Hawkers on the wing as they start to emerge in July time. Other wildlife includes Ringlet, Small Skipper and Small Tortoiseshell Butterflies. We have also been seeing foxes in the area and many rabbit kits.
