November podcast: Bird psychology and Bittern spotting

November2012-at-WWT-London-Wetland-Centre by WWT London

Psychology lecturers Tom Dickins and David Hardman discuss bird psychology: what gulls are up to in Billingsgate Market, and why certain bird species may have developed what we might see as greater intelligence than other species. Tom leads an annual field trip with students to Lundy island to study the behaviour of species such as gulls, peregrines and sheep - and outside his academic work David's an excellent photographer.

We also look at birds that may be seen on the reserve during November: wildlife photography Oscar Dewhurst talks about the best times and places to spot Bitterns. Bitterns are among his favourite photography subjects (see some examples of Oscar's bittern images here). Oscar's bittern in winter photo, taken here at WWT London Wetland Centre, was commended in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards 2012.
