The February Build-Up: Cormorant Migration in Full Swing
A sure sign that spring migration is beginning across the reserve
Cormorant migration is now underway, with numbers beginning to build over the reserve. Today, we recorded 36 birds moving through, marking the start of what is often a busy period for this species.
Over the next few weeks, these totals are likely to increase, with peak days usually bringing between 50 and 100 birds. February and early March are typically the best time to witness this movement.
Many of the cormorants passing over have spent the winter around the North Sea, particularly along the coasts of Scandinavia. At this time of year, they begin travelling south-west towards the Bay of Biscay, following seasonal changes and food availability.
Flocks can often be seen flying steadily overhead in small groups, sometimes stopping briefly at inland waters, including our reserve, to rest and feed before continuing their journey.
The growing numbers are a clear sign that spring migration is beginning, and visitors over the coming weeks may be treated to some impressive movements as the build-up continues.
