Head on over to Ganderland and Close Encounters to meet some of the rarest waterbirds on the planet

Ganderland hand-feeding area is home to goose species from around the world.

Listen for the soft grumbling call of the inquisitive nene – or Hawaiian goose – the rarest goose on the planet. See the handsome red-breasted goose grazing with its delicate beak and watch friendly emperor geese exploring the grasslands and stream. Keep low and approach quietly and they’ll happily nibble seed from an outstretched hand. Fun for all ages!*

The neighbouring Close Encounters exhibit offers a seasonal sensory experience, with heavily scented planting and light reflecting on water. Learn about the characterful eider duck and its links with North East England or quietly spend a moment sitting immersed in the surrounding duck life.

*Hand-feeding unavailable during winter due to government restrictions and safety measures surrounding bird flu. Please check the website or social channels for the latest info at the time of your visit.
