Our amphibians come into their own in springtime and the wildlife ponds near the River Wear are the perfect place to see them.

Common frogs and toads, smooth and great-crested newts; the meandering waterside pathways allow close-up views of these watery creatures as they spawn, hatch and emerge from the ponds. Ideal for keen wildlife photographers.

These ponds and the surrounding habitat are protected due to legally protected great-crested newts. It's very important for visitors not to disturb the wildlife in this area, therefore netting and any other activities are strictly prohibited to protect these amphibians.
