Celebrating 50 years of WWT Washington
Where it all began
On the morning of 29 May 1975 – at a cost of 40p for adults and 20p for children – WWT Washington Wetland Centre first opened its doors to visitors.
WWT Founder Sir Peter Scott was a friend of Sir James Steel, and he had a vision of a centre where wildlife could thrive and visitors could gain a passion for nature.
50 years later, the centre has welcomed over 3 million visitors and over 150,000 school children through its doors, igniting a passion for nature in the Northeast.
As we celebrate this milestone, we invite you to reminisce, reflect, and create new memories with your friends and family all year long!
