Sonic Pond Dipping - Listen underwater and become a citizen-scientist for the day!
Ponds are scattered throughout our landscape. As well as being widely accessible in urban environments, they are a key feature of many nature reserves. As the warmer months arrive these spaces become alive with the sounds of nature. But did you know that some of the noisiest creatures live beneath the water surface?
Join underwater sound recordist David de la Haye to listen through a hydrophone (an underwater microphone). You might hear the sounds of invertebrates of all sizes or even the plants! Human ears aren’t adapted to listening underwater but this technology allows us to reveal incredible hidden soundscapes on our doorstep. You'll be shown how to make your own sound recordings which could contribute to Eco-acoustic research.
- Experience underwater sounds at our Pondzone .
- Learn basics of field recording
- Take part in freshwater citizen-science
We anticipate sessions with David to last around 20 minutes and we'll be limiting this to 10-12 people per session. We will also have our second pond open during this time for visitors to drop-in and pond dip while waiting for the next sonic session to begin!
