WWT Washington's 50th birthday celebrations

Join us for a birthday treat as we celebrate 50 years of wetland conservation in the local community!

Date: Thursday 29 May

Times: Various activities throughout the day

What are we celebrating?

Wetlands! Our conservation successes! The people who have achieved all this – staff, volunteers, members, visitors, supporters, anyone who has told anyone about us and brought their friends. We are a huge part of this community and its history, so we really want to celebrate everyone who has made us what we are!

Birthday activities:

  • Pick up a '50 things to do at Washington' booklet and enjoy lots of self-led activities. Complete 40 out of the 50 things before the end of the year and enter our prize draw!
  • Wet Wood is reopening to visitors for the first time in over a decade. Between 11am and 2pm we'll be serving free birthday cupcakes and a soft drink from Hunters Creek cabin, where visitors can join our team in Wet Wood where they'll be sharing how important this rare habitat is for wetland conservation and how it will add to the visitor experience.
  • Enjoy a trip down memory lane with our historic photograph trail. There are lots of boards across site showing images from over the years. See how we have evolved over the years since the land came into our care. The photos will be positioned so that you will stand where the photographer stood, so you can really see the difference!
  • Check out our timeline in the visitor centre showing key events and successes over the years.
  • We'll have a memory line in the visitor centre where we’re asking our supporters to share their favourite memories of time spent here. Later in the year we’ll compile these into an exhibition.
  • We’re taking visitors back to the 1970s at the events lawn for self-led games including skipping ropes, swing ball, hula hoops and bean bag toss
