December Swan count

Teams across the Fens took part in a co-ordinated count of wintering swans on Tues 9^th December. Once the results were in, we had totals as follows:

Dawn roost count from the Ouse Washes:

• Whooper swan – 8609
• Bewick’s swan – 50

Compared with the same month last winter, there are more swans roosting on the Ouse Washes as water levels are more favourable.

Arable daytime count from the Fens:

• Whooper swan – 12,891
• Bewick’s swan – 68

Compared with the same month last winter, total number of whooper swans are slightly down for the daytime arable count. Also, we have recorded juvenile Bewick’s swans in the small number this December compared with no juveniles last December.
