The latest from Washington

A flock of 22 siskin has been noted on site these past few days, feeding on the alder catkins with a mixed flock of goldfinch and chaffinch.

The peak wader passage is ending and wildfowl are starting to arrive. As of today, our wardens have placed an extra board into the sluice that controls the water levels at Wader Lake, to mimic a controlled flash flood and allow the water to reach the low-lying parts of the meadow and grass banks.

This will make the seeds and roots of the grass species more accessible for the wintering wildfowl to feed on. With a larger area of water on Wader Lake, this will hopefully attract more wildfowl onto site.

I thought I'd do a bit of a round up of wildfowl species noted on Wader Lake so far this autumn:

Whooper swan

Shelduck

Wigeon

Teal

Shoveler

Gadwall
