Recent Sightings - 6th August

The highlight of this last week has to be a green sandpiper on the Folly pond and three green sandpipers seen on the Lochar. This signifies that migration, once again, has begun.

Other signs of the changing seasons include a wheatear spotted at Powhillon and an influx of sand martins joining the swallows and house martins to feed over the Folly and Whooper ponds. There have been kestrel, peregrine falcon, sparrow hawk and buzzard sightings on multiple occasions.

The Folly pond is getting busier with up to four little egrets seen together as well as snipe and teal. There has also been a lot of linnet activity around the reserve, with them being seen frequently from the Saltcot to the Peter Scott Observatory.

A little grebe was also seen on the Whooper pond, possible the same one that hung around for a while last year. A family of ravens have also been sighted making themselves heard over the Saltcot and courtyard.
