Summer Pond Dipping at WWT Castle Espie

Join us on Tuesdays throughout the summer at WWT Castle Espie for an exciting hands-on nature experience: Pond Dipping!

From Wednesday 1 July to Wednesday 26 August, dive into the fascinating world of freshwater wildlife. With expert guidance from our friendly learning team, you’ll explore our ponds and uncover a variety of aquatic creatures, from dragonfly nymphs to diving beetles!

Included in the entrance ticket price, which is free for WWT members. Book your entrance tickets in advance and save 10%.

Dates and times

Perfect for families and children of all ages, this drop-in activity is a fun and educational way to connect with wetland nature. The session will last approximately 25 minutes.

Dates: Wednesdays (only) from Wednesday 1 July to Wednesday 26 August

Time: 11:00, 12:00, 14:00, 15:00

Place: Pond Zone

Bring: Water to drink, an adult to help, and your creature-spotting skills!

Cost: Included in the entrance ticket price, which is free for WWT members.

What to expect

  • Use nets to gently collect aquatic invertebrates, insects, and tiny pond animals
  • Examine your finds up close before safely returning them to their habitat
  • Zoom in on the tiniest organisms using a powerful microscope
  • Learn about the amazing adaptations that help these creatures survive in their watery world

Perfect for families and children of all ages, this drop-in activity is a fun and educational way to connect with wetland nature. The session will last approximately 30 minutes. Get your ticket from reception, first come first served.

Did you know that dragonfly larvae, also known as nymphs, are ferocious underwater predators? They have a unique, extendable jaw that they use to snatch prey! They can spend up to five years in this larval stage before transforming into the beautiful flying adults you'll see zooming through the sky.

How accessible is pond dipping at WWT Castle Espie?

The route to the Pond Zone is wheelchair, pushchair and mobility scooter accessible.

The ponds are raised above ground to provide comfortable access.
