Step into Summer at Castle Espie

Step into WWT Castle Espie and enjoy the season! Signs of summer are all around. From the reserve to the lakes and ponds to the woodland paths to fantastic events to keep everyone entertained.

New life is in, around and above the lagoons, ponds and shore; bats, butterflies and dragonflies emerge; downy ducklings practise their newly-acquired swimming, dabbling or diving skills and otters enjoy sunlit bathes. Visit our wildlife page to discover the season's star species and check our latest sightings for a weekly wildlife round-up. Highlights include willow warblers - listen out for their characteristic, cascading song - and a variety of butterflies. Look out for red admirals, peacocks, holly blue and even silver-washed fritillary.

Drawn to Water: Quentin Blake at WWT continues throughout the summer. Collect and keep an illustrated guide full of Quentin Blake’s drawings and journey around the wonderful wetland world. Look out for a host of art and illustration activities aimed at all ages and abilities, including pottery classes on Thursday 20th July and crafts, sketching, pond dipping and more on various dates throughout the summer.

Hear from one of the WWT keepers who care for the collection of birds from around the world. 'Meet the Keeper' talks run at 12.45pm every day in the collection area. Ask them anything about the collection of ducks and geese, or about any of your other birds onsite! Please note that hand feeding of the birds has been paused to protect the animals in their care, this is a precautionary measure to help reduce the risk of spreading avian influenza.

On the last Wednesday of every month at 10.30am, join our experts for a Bird Watch Morning. You'll take a closer look at a variety of birds on our wetland reserve whilst they are at their most active. Come along and you will maybe spot something new? Pre-booking is advised as spaces are limited - call 028 9187 4146 to secure your place.
