Iridescence: A Dragonfly-Inspired Art Installation

The agile dragonfly captures the imagination with its shimmering wings, aerial skill, and quiet strength. It symbolises transformation, resilience, and the balance of ecosystems. Iridescence is a creative response to this remarkable insect, using sound, movement, and reflective materials to evoke its presence and power.

This summer, WWT Llanelli hosts Iridescence, a stunning art installation specially created for us by acclaimed artists and architects Tony Broomhead and Nicky Kirk. Inspired by the dragonfly, a symbol of resilience, balance, and metamorphosis, this reflective sculpture invites visitors to pause, listen, and connect with the often-overlooked life around them—and to reflect on the importance of protecting these wetland habitats.
Installed directly on water, the work meaningfully echoes the dragonfly’s deep relationship with aquatic life. Dragonflies spend most of their lives underwater as nymphs before emerging to live briefly above the surface, flying, mating, and laying eggs.
Iridescence captures this moment of change, reflecting on the fragile beauty of life in transition.
Each dragonfly in the installation is crafted from folded stainless steel and carefully heat-treated to produce a unique pattern of iridescent colours.
As part of our first-ever Dragonfly Festival, this incredible artwork dedicated to dragonflies will be on show daily from 26 July until 22 September 2025.
