With their large, multifaceted eyes and delicate, transparent wings, they are a joy to watch as they zip through the air with agility and speed.

Dragonflies are some of nature’s most dazzling creatures, with their shimmering wings, acrobatic flight, and vibrant colours. A living link to the past, these ancient wonders of wetlands ruled the skies long before the first dinosaurs walked the earth. They’re not just beautiful – they’re also incredibly important and are powerful indicators of environmental health, thriving in clean wetlands.

What do dragonflies do?

Dragonflies are expert hunters, feasting on small insects like mosquitoes, flies, and midges. Their acrobatic flight skills allow them to catch prey mid-air with almost perfect precision. They also play an essential role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem, keeping insect populations in balance. Plus, they’re a great indicator of clean, unpolluted water!

Do dragonflies come in different colours?

Absolutely! Dragonflies come in a dazzling array of colours, from metallic blues and greens to fiery reds and golden yellows. Their colours can change as they mature, and some even have iridescent or translucent wings that shimmer in the sunlight.

Where can I find dragonflies?

Dragonflies love being near freshwater habitats like ponds, lakes, rivers and marshes. They need water to breed, so anywhere with a good source of clean water is a great place to find them. You’ll often see them zipping around reeds or resting on plants near the water’s edge.

What’s the best time of day to see dragonflies?

Dragonflies are most active during warm, sunny days, especially between late morning and mid-afternoon. They love basking in the sun and are usually out hunting when temperatures are at their peak.

What’s the lifecycle of a dragonfly?

A dragonfly’s lifecycle has three main stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Females lay eggs in or near water. These hatch into nymphs – fierce underwater hunters that can live in water for months or even years. When ready, a nymph climbs out of the water, sheds its skin, and emerges as a fully formed adult dragonfly, ready to take to the skies. It’s an incredible transformation!

Are dragonflies and damselflies the same?

Not quite! While they belong to the same order (Odonata), dragonflies and damselflies have some key differences. Dragonflies tend to be larger, with thicker bodies, and they keep their wings spread out when resting. Damselflies, on the other hand, have slimmer bodies and usually fold their wings neatly along their backs when at rest. Do dragonflies sting or bite?

There’s no need to worry – dragonflies don’t sting and they rarely bite humans. They might give a tiny nip if handled, but they aren’t aggressive or dangerous. In fact, they’re great friends to have around because they help keep other insects under control.

How are dragonflies classified?

Dragonflies belong to the animal kingdom’s class Insecta and the order Odonata. Within Odonata, they’re part of the suborder Anisoptera, which distinguishes them from their close relatives, the damselflies (suborder Zygoptera). There are over 3,000 species of dragonflies worldwide, each with its own unique traits and behaviours!

What are the myths surrounding dragonflies?

Dragonflies have been the subject of myths and folklore for centuries. In some cultures, they’re seen as symbols of transformation and good luck, while in others, they’ve been linked to superstition. Some old European tales called them “devil’s darning needles,” but don’t worry – they’re completely harmless and actually very helpful.
