Great crested grebes & garganey

The great crested grebe on Arun Riverlife photo by Colin Knight (2016)

Sunday 26 March

  • Top bird of the moment is a summer visiting duck the Garganey. A cracking male showed at the scrape hide and then the Ramsar and Lapwing hides the following day. It did a little displaying with its giga counter call.
  • A pair of Great crested grebes were on the large lagoon on Sunday. They were fishing close together and you could see the slightly larger head dress of the male. Fingers crossed that they might stay and breed. Watch out for their display dance if they hang around.
  • A red legged partridge was an unusual sight on the wet grassland and a stoat made all the gulls and waders very agitated when it crossed over the open grass.
  • Five species of gull on Sunday and 6 on Saturday (med, black headed, lesser and greater black-backed, common and herring)
  • At least four lapwing are now on eggs and the oystercatcher pair at ramsar hide were nest scraping, Sunday.
  • Pairs of Shoveler, teal, gadwall, Tufted duck showing well. A handful of snipe still visible around most of the reserve.
  • Brimstone, red admiral, peacock and comma butterflies on the wing
  • Chiffchaff and blackcap singing with dunnock, robin, wren, song thrush and drumming great spotted woodpecker.
