Latest Sightings

Martin Mere is a fantastic destination for an enjoyable day out, especially during this extended period of warm, sunny weather.

Over the weekend, we observed the arrival of some new species: 1 Garganey and 1 Spotted Redshank on Woodend Marsh, and 1 White Stork seen on the Mere before it flew over to the Reedbed Walk.

A Cuckoo was heard in the Reedbeds, and the Bittern was witnessed feeding. Warbler species, including Grasshopper, Cetti's, Reed, Sedge and Willow can also be heard singing.

1 Temminck's Stint, 1 Greenshank, 2 Common Sandpiper, 2 Little Ringed Plover, 2 Ringed Plover, 8 Ruff, 2 Redshank, 1 Little Egret, and 24 Avocets were counted on Woodend Marsh. Over 60 Lapwings were counted in the fields behind Tomlinson hide.

Whitethroat, Linnet, Chiffchaff, Reed Bunting, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Bullfinch, Blackcap and Stonechat were seen along the nature trails.

At Ron Barker hide, 1 Kingfisher, 2 Marsh Harrier, 2 Hobby, 16 Cattle Egret, and 1 Grey Heron were sighted.

From Harrier hide, 1 Kingfisher, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 9 Tufted Ducks, 2 Little Grebe, and 4 Gadwall were observed.

Common Tern and Arctic Tern can be spotted on the Mere, amongst the Black-Headed Gulls and a few Mediterranean Gulls. Wigeon and Shovelers can also be seen, as well as Swallows flying over.
