Recent Sightings 28th August-3rd September

Highlights: Curlew Sandpipers, Little Ringed Plovers, Kingfisher and a wealth of Dragonflies

British Steel Hide

Bird highlights from the British Steel Hide this week include up to three juvenile Curlew Sandpipers, two Spotted Redshanks, a juvenile Little Ringed Plover, a Ruff and a juvenile Glossy Ibis remained until the 30th August.

A Kingfisher has been seen hunting around the hide and the large flocks of Black-tailed Godwits, Redshank and Greenshank often affording brilliant views in front of the hide. Our wintering ducks are beginning to return with low double figures of Pintail and Wigeon seen on the dafen scrapes this week. A Sparrowhawk, three Buzzards, a Wheatear and Bullfinches are amongst the other birds spotted.

Millennium Wetlands

An otter has been sighted on the wetlands as well as a Kingfisher and a hunting Peregrine. Up to 4 Tree Pipits, a Golden Plover, 2 Ravens and 4 Grey Wagtails have been seen flying over the reserve. Lots of Dragon and damselflies on the wing in the sunnier spells, with Migrant, Southern and Common Hawkers, Small red-eyed Damselflies, Common Darters and Emerald Damselflies have been seen also.

Freshwater Lagoon and Grounds

Four Green Sandpipers have been seen on the freshwater lagoon, as well as 32 Shoveler, 66 Teal and a range of warblers including a Reed Warbler and a Willow Warbler.
