UPDATE: The first Chiffchaff has been present at Welney this afternoon, another sure sign of spring on the way!

Finally the waters are receding on the reserve at Welney and with the weather improving we are seeing more spring arrivals.  Little ringed plover, common tern and more garganey within the last week.

Access for visitors is improving with most of the hides now open, and for those wanting to get the best connection with nature, the smaller plastic hides offer amazing windows out over the washes with nothing interrupting the amazing sounds of the displaying birds.

With the weather forecast and wind direction looking good for this Sunday it looks like the perfect day to come out and explore as there's something for everyone.  For those keeping their eyes on the skies you might be the one to see our first swallow, sand martin or house martin.  For those with plenty of time to enjoy the day, spending some time on the footbridge next to the visitor centre might result in the first water voles sighting of the year.  For those who want to get hands on with nature, there has been an explosion of new life at the pond dipping stations since the sunny weather arrived.
