Artist Gill McCoy features in the gallery this December

Posted on 14 Dec 2020

Gill's work is on display until the end of December.

Gill in her own words:

I was born in Yorkshire in an industrial area of steel and coal mining. After Grammar school in Durham City (more coal mines) I quite illogically decided to go to agricultural college. Not surprisingly I was the only girl there. During an Easter lambing job in Northumberland I fell in love with shepherding and this became my vocation for 30 years in Devon, Dorset, Australia, New Zealand and Norfolk. Then as Farm Manager on a tourist farm I worked with rare breeds of sheep, goats, pigs, cattle, poultry and heavy horses for 10 years.

Unable to study art at school, then too busy with work and family life, I am now making up for lost time at a local weekly art class and loving it. Caring for livestock demands good observation skills and knowing your subject; the same applies to art. The difficult bit is conveying what you know onto paper - that's what I'm trying to do now.......in an original, if untrained way.
