74 moth species in the latest survey
We did a moth survey last week and recorded 74 species in the trap that as set on a warm, clear night. The biggest count we had of any one species was 33 clouded border moths followed by 19 common footman. Of the big boys we counted 11 elephant hawkmoths and 5 poplar hawkmoths. We had 11 four-spotted footman males and one female, she’s the one with the spots. There were lots of singles including a peach blossom (pictured above), a willow beauty, and a flame shoulder.
Our butterfly survey last week recorded over 100 butterflies during the two hour survey on site. Highest numbers were large white butterflies, then meadow browns and peacock butterflies. Good number of red admirals and commas out as well with a handful of common blues.

Arun Riverlife lagoon: 5 mallards, 1 moorhen, 3 black-headed gulls, 2 tufted ducks,9 Canada geese, 2 greylags, 5 gadwall ducks, 1 wood pigeon 1 reed warbler singing, 1 goldfinch singing
Scrape hide: 62 greylag geese, 1 great white egret
Ramsar hide: 5 cattle egrets, 1 little egret.

Reedbed: 2 great tit fledglings, 1 chiffchaff, 1 sedge warblers, 30 mallards, 2 tufted ducks, 2 black-headed gulls, 1 moorhens, 1 woodpigeon
Ramsar and Sand martin hides: 1 great white egret, 1 little egret, 1 oystercatcher, c 80 sand martins
Scrape hide: 2 marsh harriers
