Join us for a magical evening adventure as we tune into the secret world of bats!

As twilight falls over our beautiful wetland nature reserve, we’ll head out with bat detectors in hand to track down these fascinating nocturnal mammals. Watch as they swoop and flutter above our heads, hunting for insects in the dusk sky.

Led by an expert guide, you’ll learn how to identify different UK bat species by their high-pitched calls and distinct flight patterns. Along the way, you might also spot other crepuscular creatures like owls, hedgehogs and foxes!

This is a rare chance to experience the reserve after hours and connect with nature in a whole new way.

Date: Friday 5 September 2025

Time: 7 pm (we expect the walk to wrap up for a 9 pm finish)

Bring: Comfortable shoes, a drink, and a jumper if it gets chilly. Dress for the weather!

Cost: £12 per person. Booking is essential as spaces are very limited.

Please note that the centre will close as normal at 5 pm. If you've spent the day with us, you will need to leave the site and come back to us for 7 pm.

If the event has to be called off due to bad weather or unforeseen circumstances, we will contact you to offer a full refund or an alternative date.

  • There are 18 species of bat in the UK, and all of them are protected by law.
  • The Pipistrelle Bat is the UK’s smallest species – it can eat up to 3,000 insects in one night!
  • Bats use echolocation to navigate and hunt in the dark – they “see” with sound.
  • The Brown Long-eared Bat has huge ears and can hear a ladybird walking on a leaf.
  • Bats are the only mammals capable of true flight – their wings are actually modified hands!
