Millennium Wetlands

On a bat survey this week, the reserve team used echolocation meters to identify noctule, brown long eared, common and soprano pipistrelle bats on the reserve. It's been a good week for insects - a beautiful queen european hornet was found in the centre which was successfully released and a four spot chaser dragonfly was spotted on the car park. There have been lots of grass snakes including many young ones this week, a lizard and a weasel were spotted too. We finally have mediterranean gull chicks so its nice to think our reserve is part of their growing breeding success in the UK. Other bird highlights this week include red kite and water rail.

British Steel Hide

Two lapwing chicks have been discovered on the marsh scrapes adding to our good number of successful nests this year. Numbers of little egret and cormorant have been increasing on the saline lagoon this week which is always nice to see. There is lots of marsh mallow on the salt marsh which is a rare plant species.
