British Steel Hide

A short eared owl was spotted flying over the marsh this week. There have been good numbers of lapwing and black tailed godwit with a few knot, redshank and bar tailed godwits mixed in amongst them. There were over 50 Canada geese out on the marsh and it was rather comical watching their long necks pop up and down in the grass. There have been lots of little grebes on site too. Songbirds have started to sing this week giving us some lovely early signs of spring.

Millenium Wetlands

Otters were seen on monday morning so the week got off to a great start! Barn owl pellets have been found frequently by the canoe safari so we have set up a camera trap to try and video the culprit. A kingfisher has been seen in the same spot a few types so hopefully they are checking out a potential nest site. A treecreeper and three stonechat were seen on thursday. There have been a couple of pochards about all week on deep water lake and a solo little egret has taken to feeding out there too. When cleaning out nest boxes for spring some of the reserve staff accidentally disturbed some adorable wood and yellow necked mice in their cosy nests!
