Highlights: Pallid Harrier, Merlin, Great White Egret, Peregrine

We welcomed in the New Year this week with the Annual WWT Llanelli Tick and Twitch, which saw a great turn out despite the rainy conditions!

Saline lagoon and Dafen Scrapes:

This week keen birders have been packing into the British steel hide and Michael Powell hide to catch a glimpse of the Pallid Harrier that has been spotted up and down the estuary and coast line for the last few weeks, with the efforts paying off on Thursday (04/01/2024) with it being sighted over the estuary. On New Year’s Day there was a great display from a Merlin visible from the British steel hide.

On 05/01/2024 large numbers of Wigeon were present on the saline lagoon and a Peregrine could be seen on the outskirts of the saline lagoon area.

Millennium Wetlands:

Over the deep water lake we had a sighting of a Great White Egret during our new years day event, as well as some sightings of Water Rail, Teal, Shoveler, Shelduck, Tufted, Gadwall and Mallard ducks. As well as a steady group of Lapwing and Snipe throughout the week on the stone islands in front of the sir Peter Scott hide.
