Spring training for the team at WWT Washington Wetland Centre

Spring brings new life to the reserve, and it also brings new learning opportunities for our team. Everyone who joins WWT Washington receives full training when they start, and all staff and volunteers take part in refresher sessions every five years. This ongoing cycle helps us maintain high standards of safety, confidence and practical skill across the whole team.

This year, both new starters and long‑standing team members have been developing their skills. Kate, Mark, Jamie and Ruby, have been progressing through training sessions, and volunteers Billy, Alan and Chiara have taken part too. All training focuses on safe equipment use, correct maintenance and meeting essential health and safety standards.

UTV Training

Kate, Jamie and Mark completed the UTV course. Our UTV is a Kubota, the small orange buggy you may see around the site. The course covers four wheel drive, differential locks, safe loading and general operator skills, along with maintenance knowledge.

Tractor Training

We have two Kubota tractors on site, each with different attachments for different tasks. Training ensures the team can safely attach implements, understand the controls and operate the tractors confidently. This is an important part of keeping the reserve running smoothly.

Brush Cutter Training

The brush cutter is one of our most frequently used tools, especially in summer. Training focuses on safe handling, awareness of surroundings and correct technique. You will often see the team putting this into practice as they help keep the reserve tidy and accessible.

Kate shared her experience of the sessions, saying:
"The training is a really good opportunity to gain knowledge from expert trainers, many of whom have used these tools within the conservation sector. We always come away from the sessions having learned something new, picked up useful tips and shared skills along the way."

If you visit and see a fleet of orange vehicles and equipment out on the reserve, you can be sure you are in safe hands. Our staff and volunteers work hard to care for the wetlands, and this spring’s training has helped everyone feel ready for the busy months ahead
