Welney wetlands still open despite flooded road

Some of our wetlands are acting a flood storage at the moment, but we are still open. Latest road, lift and site access included here.

Some of our wetlands are acting a flood storage at the moment, but we are still open. Providing a home for wildlife along with a fantastic welcome and experience for visitors.

Spending half a day at Welney you can still get in a good walk, experience some incredible winter wildlife and enjoy a commentated swan feed from one of our team. Our Lady Fen walk route is currently still open for the chance to spot species like short-eared owls, flocks of lapwing, golden plover, wigeon and teal. Whooper swans flying between the pools of water and the surrounding arable land, redwing and fieldfare flying over or dropping down to feed amongst the grasses. Not forgetting our resident wildlife in the shape of hares, deer, barn owls, stonechat, meadow pipit, skylark and kestrels. We have a delicious range of food and drink to be found at the Wigeon Café in our visitor centre to keep you fuelled during your day out. The first floor windows overlook our resident tree sparrows on the feeders and the wetlands beyond.

What to expect from a visit

A trip over to the main hide for a swan feed is a must, enjoy a fantastic commentary about our wetlands, the changes we see throughout the year, the wonderful winter wildlife we experience at this time of year and how important wetlands are for wildlife and people year-round. See some of our whooper swans up close and enjoy seeing the diving ducks making nothing of the deeper water, like pochard and tufted ducks. Some of the mallard even attempt to get grain by taking small dives or jumping into the floating wheelbarrow itself.

Access - paths and hides

*Our lift access has been restored
Access to all further hides is currently not available to any visitors as the footpaths are flooded. We hope that water levels recede in the coming weeks and that we are able to make footpaths and further hides accessible once more.

Access - local roads

Update - 23 Jan 2023 the Welney Wash road is now open and NOT flooded, you can use this route to get to us. Access to WWT Welney is always possible from the A10 via Littleport and Ten Mile Bank. Our blog from 2021 goes into more detail about what that means for our wetlands and the wildlife at times like this.
