Spring wildlife update – wetland highs and lows
Breeding season is always a tense time, months of hard work getting the habitat just right, but what will the rewards be this year? Here is a roundup of the season so far.

Hides re-open to enhance wildlife viewing
From 17 May, all hides, except Reedbed hide will re-open alongside the re-introduction of indoor seating at the Wigeon Café, for a fuller wetland experience.

Spring wetland management
Each spring the final preparations across our wetland habitat can take place ahead of breeding season. But the flooding on the Ouse Washes adds extra tasks for the team and mean this part will be unavailable to birds for a little while longer.

Flooding on the Ouse Washes
The Ouse Washes are the engineered floodplains of the River Great Ouse. Created over 400 years ago, they have facilitated the drainage of much of the Fens, but we now need to add natural flood management back if we are to survive a changing climate.

Water levels and access
Water levels are currently high on the Ouse Washes, great views of the large pochard flock in front of the main hide, the flight in of swans at dusk and the variety of birds on Lady Fen. Access is possible from Ely, Littleport and Downham Market.
