First calf of the year born

First calf of the year born

Our first calf of the year was born on Friday. The Long-horn cattle are on the fields by the community reedbed walk up by the sewage works so they can be viewed from there.

Both mum and calf are doing well and we are expecting a large number of calves over the next three weeks. We have Long-horn cattle here which manage the wetlands. They are a traditional breed of cattle and they graze by leaving tuffs of grass which are ideal for waders to nest in for protection, as well as supplying the manure for the chicks to eat insects.

Let me know if you walk along to see them.
