Avocets

Three Avocets were on the reserve all day today. Very restless, and occasionally circling up very high before deciding to stay around a bit longer, they gave the impression of birds that would rather be somewhere else, but couldn't decide which way to go ! A juvenile Spotted Redshank was also seen, along with the regular Ruff, Black-tailed Godwits, Snipe and Lapwings.

Raptors were well represented, with sevaral Common Buzzards, along with Marsh Harrier, Sparrowhawk, Peregrine and Kestrel all showing regularly.

Other highlights included Little Egret from the Harrier Hide, Kingfishers from both the Ron Barker hide and from the Canoe Safari, and well in excess of 300 Goldfinches feeding on Thistles in fields at the far side of the Mere.
