Cygnets hatch in spring sunshine
Two black swan cygnets have hatched overnight in Close Encounters. The fluffy siblings are already out on the water and have been spotted learning to clean and preen themselves by mimicking their parents.

As of 11.30am we have 10 avocets on Wader Lake! If they all pair off and nest, that's a new site record (we had four pairs last year and in 2012 too) :-)

A week "job-swapping" at Pensthorpe.
This week I was lucky enough to visit Pensthorpe Wildlife and Gardens in order to work and learn behind the scenes. Their warden Kat MacPherson then made her own way to WWT Slimbridge Wetlands Centre for a low-down in flamingo husbandry.
