Incredible journeys of our geese
Looking out across a field full of 45000 geese, it can be difficult to imagine how our researchers are able to pick out individual birds and track their movements during their migration, but with the help of light but highly visible plastic neck rings, we can follow the stories of individual geese. We can track their family relationships, from their parents and siblings onto their eventual mates – we can sometimes even see if they have any particular friends in the flock!
ULT and ULS:
First spotted by our researchers in Central Iceland in July 2013, ULS and mate ULT are Pink-footed geese who have returned to Martin Mere for the second time this winter. Last year, they were first spotted on the 18th of September and were observed regularly throughout October, until their departure at the end of the month. We’ll be keeping a close eye on them over the next month or so, to see what they’re getting up to.
