Latest Sightings
The birds of prey have continued to put on quite a display here at Martin Mere on our reserve during Bank Holiday weekend, with many Marsh Harriers, Buzzards and Kestrels having been sighted. A Peregrine was also spotted from Rees Hide.
Multiple waders have been spotted on Woodend Marsh such as Redshank with their bright orange legs and Little Ringed Plover with the lovely yellow ring around their eyes, both seen from Tomlinson Hide. In more exciting news, the Spoonbill was spotted from Rees hide where the Temminck's Stint was also observed feeding at the water's edge. The Avocets continue to nest on the islands at Woodend, if you look close enough you may even be able to spot some fluffy chicks among them. Swifts have been swooping around Woodend Marsh after travelling from Africa.
Cetti’s Warblers and Sedge Warblers continue to sing away at Ron Barker hide, where the regularly visiting Kingfisher has been seen on the hunt for fish. An elegant Wood Sandpiper was also spotted from Ron Barker hide but have more recently been sighted in Woodend Marsh.
Among the Common Terns on the Mere some Arctic Terns have been sighted. Look out for the black tip on the Arctic Terns beak and their much longer tails. And finally the Yellow Wagtails have made an appearance over on Plover field, which can be seen from United Utilities Hide.
