Recent Sightings 1st - 7th May

Highlights - Savi's Warbler, Grasshopper Warbler, Swift, Kingfisher, Common Sandpiper, Whimbrel and Damselflies.

Millennium Wetlands

This week was very exciting due to the Savi's Warbler that unexpectedly started singing in the water treatment reed bed. This British rarity looks similar to a reed warbler but has a similar song to a grasshopper warbler and is a first for both WWT Llanelli and Carmarthenshire. Speaking of grasshopper warblers, there are now at least three on site. We also had our first swifts this week which means we now have all the regular summer visitors, with sand and house martins along with swallows too. We believe there may be a pair of kingfishers nesting on deep water lake and we are being very careful not to disturb them at the moment. A pair of cuckoo are still around too. Damselflies have emerged this week including azure and common blues.

Saline and Freshwater Lagoon

Highlights from the waders this week include a whimbrel and common sandpiper. We think a few pairs of linnet are nesting on the edge of the marsh along with sedge warblers, whitethroats and lesser whitethroats. The annual St Marks fly has emerged this week too. Of course, one of the best things about spring is getting to watch greylag and canada goslings explore the world around them for the first time.
