The Festival of Swans

Well, what a busy weekend! As part of WWT Welney wetland centre annual weekend ‘Festival of swan’s’ we held one of our open Flock Together workshop sessions down in the pond room.

It was a really special session because the Fenland Poet Laureate, Leanne Moden wrote a poem especially for the occasion and over which people did their wetland mono printing.

Below is the poem:

Mythology

I am the Child of Lir-Apollo’s light-

A tireless traveller, gliding through the night.

I am St Hugh’s lieutenant, Lincoln-born.

Mu duffel coat of feathers keeps me warm.

Heraldic pilgrim; knight from days of old.

I am sweet Leda’s lover, bathed in gold.

I am no ugly duckling. Sleek and keen:

My loyalty is always to the Queen.

I am the maiden drinking from the well.

I am the secret lost. I will not tell.

Blank pages here, unwritten on my wing.

I will stay Mute, until it’s time to sing.

I love this poem-thanks Leanne! Can you work out which bird it's about?!

During this session, everyone was asked to choose a bit of wetland plant, mix their paint and print onto coloured pages of the poem. It’s great to see all the different shapes plants make on the page and often they came out not quite how you expected. Everyone got involved and it was nice to have a session with families working together on their prints.

For many (including myself), the highlight was getting to use Karen's roller!

I’ll be putting these prints up on display at the centre with a little blurb about Flock Together so come and have a look at what we’ve done next time your in!
