The monthly Wetland Bird Survey didn't disappoint!

Osprey, Spoonbills, 3 Record-Breaking Grey Phalaropes, and a rare Black Darter dragonfly

This week's WeBS count (Wetland Bird Survey) gave us a brilliant snapshot of the feathered wildlife around the site — and it didn't disappoint!

Wildlife Sightings at WWT Llanelli from 5th September to 12th September 2025

Highlights: Grey Phalarope, Garganey, Osprey, Barnacle Goose, Spoonbill.

These monthly counts are part of a nationwide effort coordinated by the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) to monitor the health of our wetland bird populations. By collecting consistent data across hundreds of sites, WeBS helps conservationists understand long-term trends and protect vital habitats.

We timed our count with the high tide on Monday, and the birds were out in force!

A centre record of three Grey Phalarope were seen together at the same time, causing great excitement for our visitors!

The reserve team counted plenty of other waders, including over a thousand Black-tailed Godwit with some Bar-tailed Godwit scattered among the flocks. Two Garganey ducks were seen — one from the British Steel Hide and one out on the Millennium Wetlands side.

Five Spoonbill were counted, sweeping their amazing bills through the shallows for food. Let's hope the flock continues to grow as we head towards the winter.

Two Spotted Redshank were seen with the regular Redshank, and the team counted many Curlew making good use of the mudflats.

The famous three Cattle Egret are still with us, and a Great White Egret was recorded on the Millennium Wetlands.

A lone Barnacle Goose made a surprise appearance, and a magnificent Osprey was also seen fishing in the estuary — always a thrilling sight!

Dragonfly Festival Finale: A Rare Find!

Just in time to wrap up our Dragonfly Festival, regular visitor David Westmacott spotted a Black Darter — only the second ever sighting at Llanelli, with the first dating back to 2003! This brings our site total to 23 species of dragonflies and damselflies — a fantastic milestone.

Sunny spells have also brought out plenty of other dragonflies, damselflies, and butterflies, making it a great time to explore the reserve’s quieter corners on dry days.
