WWT Llanelli will be closed for one day on Wednesday 20 May.

We’re sorry for this short-term inconvenience, but this date has been chosen to allow our team to rearrange the shop and entrance ahead of the upcoming Welcome Project construction, and get everything ready in time for a fantastic May half-term experience. We will reopen on Thursday 21 May as usual. Thank you for your support and understanding.

British Steel Hide

We had a good mix of waders this week including grey plover, spotted redshank, curlew and dunlin. In particular, numbers of redshank have increased, with over 200 on the saline lagoon at high tide. We have seen wheatear, meadow pipit and pied wagtail on the marsh along with both canada and greylag geese. After a while of not seeing one, a sparrowhawk was spotted flying over the marsh too. There have regularly been three green sandpipers on the freshwater lagoon and we can't wait for you to visit and enjoy them with us too!

Millennium Wetlands

The highlight this week was a great crested grebe that stuck around for two days - although it always seemed to be asleep so we never really saw its distinctive head plumage. There have been beautiful male pintails and pochard on deep water lake too. In the really cold weather, balck-tailed godwits took refuge on the island and it was nice to see them more close up, they really do have some funny little personalitites. Song thrushes have been using the paths as places to scrape open snails so we've been having some really good views of them. Lapwings have been showing early signs of the characteristic territorial behaviours which means spring is well and truly on the way!
