British Steel Hide

We continue to get regular sightings of the Spoonbill often showing well feeding close to the Michael Powell and British Steel hide. Large numbers of Shelduck have been seen on the Dafen scrapes, as well as 3 Gargany and groups of Lesser black-backed, Herring and Black-headed gulls. Red Kite have been seen circling over the salt marsh. A Wheater was also seen on the fence posts on the Salt marsh. Whimbrel are often heard calling from the Steel hide with occasional sightings on the saline lagoons.

Millennium Wetlands

Pairs of Tufted duck, Shoveler, Gadwall and Pochard have been seen around the site. Chicks and ducklings are beginning to get more common with Coot chicks being the most recent addition. Large numbers of 300+ Black-tailed godwit continue to be seen from the Herons wing hide, with the males showing off their striking orange breeding plumage. Our warblers are now regular sounds heard around the reserve, with 10 Cetti's, 13 Sedge, 7 Reed, 4 Willow warbler, 10 Chiffchaff, 10 Whitethroat, 1 Lesser Whitethroat and 28 Blackcaps. Long-tailed tits are busy carrying food to their chicks in hedgerows. On Thursday a Marsh harrier was seen hunting over the Bittern reedbed.
