Recent Sightings 1st - 7th October
Highlights: Green Elf Cup, Little Stint, Curlew Sandpiper, Peregrine
As autumn starts, fungi can be seen fruiting all across the site, with species such as Saffron Milkcap and Shaggy Inkcap being seen around the grounds. A particular highlight was Green Elf Cup seen on the Northern Loop of the reserve. It can often be seen as a green tinge on rotting wood, but it is quite rare to see the actual fruiting bodies as seen in the photo.
This week, Deep Water Lake hosted Black-tailed Godwit, Wigeon, Tufted Ducks, 19 Cormorants and 39 Coots - almost too many to coot! Meanwhile, on the Saline Lagoon, a Curlew Sandpiper was seen, and on Dafen Scrapes, a Little Stint was foraging amongst other waders.
This week has seen digger work across the reserve playing an important part in removing silt from the ponds, scrapes, and ditches. This work is also crucial for rejuvenating areas important for breeding birds, such as Lapwing and Black-headed Gulls, that use our islands to nest. Whilst clearing access for the digger, a Peregrine was spotted flying over the Pond Walk.
