British Steel Hide

70 Lapwing have recently been seen on the Dafen scrapes with around 25 juveniles within the group. We believe these juveniles are from the our recent successful breeding season with the Lapwing across the reserve. Around 100 Redshank have been seen from the Michael Powell hide, as well as groups of Little egret and Shelduck.

Millennium Wetlands

Red kite have been seen flying over Deep water lake this morning. Black-tailed godwit numbers continue to rise with around 450 being seen this week from the Herons wing hide. Our Swan cygnets are growing and all doing well across the reserve. Pochard are regularly seen in front of the Peter Scot hide as well as some young Tufted duck ducklings. On the Stone islands four broods of Black-headed gull chicks are getting ready to fledge, likely from a second nesting attempt.

Around the reserve, lots of butterfly's are making regular appearances in the good weather including, Gatekeeper, Ringlet, Peacock and Large whites. Emperor dragonflys and Small red-eyed damselflys are often seen from the fishing platforms on the northern loop of the reserve. Lot of reptiles are also being seen on log piles around the reserve including, Slow worm, Grass snake and Common lizard.
