Recent Sightings (2nd-5th June)
Birds from the Reserve
Recent sightings from the reserve have included 3 Spoonbills (5th June), a pair of Teal, a Wigeon, a pair of Shoveler, 4 Little Egrets and 5 Redshank from the British Steel Hide. Up to 300 Black-tailed Godwits are still regularly roosting on Deep Water Lake, and there are a good few broods of Gadwall on the lake as well as our first Pochard brood of the year. A good array of Warbler species can still be heard singing, although most will now be busy feeding chicks. Lesser Whitethroats, Whitethroats, Chiffchaffs, Blackcaps, Sedge Warblers, Reed Warblers and Cetti's Warblers can be heard around the reserve. We have also seen young Blackcaps, Goldfinches, Long-tailed Tits and Swallows beginning to show up.
Other Wildlife
A male Red-eyed Damselfly was seen in amongst hundreds of Common Blue and Azure Damselflies from the new screen on the first fishing platform. Emperors, Hairy Dragonflies, Black-tailed Skimmers, Broad-bodied Chasers and Four-spotted Chasers can now be found fairly reliably around the Deep Water Lake. The first Large Skippers of the year were seen on the saltmarsh on the 4th, and Silver Y Moths have been seen feeding on wildflowers near the British Steel Hide and the fishing platforms.
