British Steel Hide

The number of common gulls has increased up to five this week. Among the masses of black-tailed godwits, there has been redshank and curlew, and of course our stunning spoonbills. A great crested grebe in beautiful breeding plumage has been on both the saline lagoon and dafen scrapes. There have been lots more bumblebee queens around as the weather warmed up, including white tailed and buff tailed bees.

Millennium Wetlands

The highlight this week was a Marsh Harrier flying out from the reed bed where it had perhaps been roosting. While there have been lots of migrant springtime chiffchaffs on site, we have still been seeing winter visitors such as a redpoll and redwings. While surveying the birds early in the morning we saw two otters playing in deep water lake. The pair of kingfishers are still digging in the bank outside the herons wing hide most days and the lapwings are taking up residence on the islands ready to start nesting! A red kite has been seen flying and hunting over the western scrapes too.
