In spring, wetlands offer the return of wading birds such as black-tailed godwits (in some parts of the UK), who rely on these support systems for food and a safe place to nest. Wetlands are not only lifelines for them, but for over a billion of us too.
What’s more, as carbon stores and natural flood defenders, they are one of our best protectors against climate change and its disastrous effects. And yet, wetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests – 35% have disappeared since 1970.
