Finger crossed for the lesser's nest building.

Finger crossed for the lesser's nest building.

Just a quick post to highlight the exciting happens in the world of Slimbridge's lesser flamingos! The sunshine is certainly working its magic at Slimbridge currently. The hard work that Phil has put in with the lesser flamingos has yielded spectacular results all of a sudden. Three pairs of this threatened species are currently building nests on the island in the middle of their enclosure. A combination of the good weather, being shut of their house and Phil's loving care of their nesting island (to ensure that it is the right consistency of gloopy mud for the birds to mould around their nest mounds) has triggered this burst of reproductive activity. Let's hope that this nesting behaviour continues and that many more pairs catch on too!

The warm May sunshine is just what the lesser flamingos need to give them a good start at attempting to breed this year. Be sure to check out their nest building activities on your next visit to WWT Slimbridge.
