Osprey Update
Sorry for the delay in putting a post on here. Brian Morrell our learning manager who usually updates this is away at present so therefore I thought I would give you a quick catch up as to wha's been going on.
Most of you will have probably heard through either following me on Twitter @WWT Caerlaverock, on the Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/wwtcaerlaverock) or on the WWT Latest Sightings (http://www.wwt.org.uk/visit/caerlaverock/wildlife/latest-sightings/) that on Sunday 21st April the Osprey laid her first egg!
When I turned the camera on the male was stood hovering over the egg. Pretty much throughout the rest of the day the male incubated the eggs with the female returning every few hours with a nice wide selection of fish ranging from Trout to Flounder.
Throughout the following few days the male again was the lead in the incubation of the egg with the female hanging around the nest occasionally swapping incubation duties but mainly out fishing. Ospreys tend to have two days between eggs to we had hope that on the morning of the 23rd the second egg would be laid. We all waited in anticipation when the camera came on but no second egg. Other than a little lover tiffs about where the lining of the nest should go the activity on the nest was quiet with the male continuing to incubate the eggs with the female taking turns throughout the day.
On the morning of the 24th the cameras went live just after 10am, and there was two eggs!! Fantastic news! We also noticed on the same day on the television screen next to our osprey screen in the visitor centre our barn owls had laid their first eggs as well...eggcellent news!!
We are hoping the female lays another eggs either tomorrow (26th or 27th) and I wouldn't be surprised if that was it for this year but only time will tell so keep watching the webcam live from 10am -6pm every day to see whats happening on the nest.
Brian Morrell will be back in work soon so for daily updates keep an eye on Twitter of Facebook but I will post on here if I can to let you know about the third egg.
