Picking a desirable residence for the year.

Picking a desirable residence for the year.

The Caribbean flamingos (find them opposite the restaurant) at WWT Slimbridge have been thrown a little by the weird and slightly uninspiring weather that's made up most of Spring 2012 so far. These flamingos like it best with the odd day of rain and then some days of sunshine to kick start them into thinking about breeding. However, with the couple of days of sunshine that has been around, the birds have taken a fresh interest in the mud-mound nests that have been created by Phil and his colleagues ready for another breeding season. Here's hoping that the weather continues to improve and the birds will jump on the breeding bandwagon with enthusiasm! You can see clearly the two breeding islands in the middle of the enclosure, so keep a look out for any of the elaborate courtship displays that the birds will perform on and around them.

The Caribbean flamingos getting into the spirit of things on their nest mounds. The birds will encourage all of the flock to breed by performing synchronised courtship displays. More about these behaviours will be explained over the coming weeks in the Flamingo Diary.
