Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have raised £7million for wetlands in the last decade

In the last ten years, players of People’s Postcode Lottery have raised over £7million in support of WWT’s work to restore wetlands and unlock their power.

From supporting the day-to-day management of WWT’s 10 UK wetland centres, to helping international teams to deliver major programmes with local communities in Cambodia and Madagascar, player support has culminated this month in the opening of a new wetland feature at WWT Slimbridge.

Officially unveiled on Thursday 8 May, the Estuary Shoreline project is a stunning new wetland landscape, with an all-weather event space surrounded by lush wetland wildflower meadows and over 20 native trees.

WWT Chief Executive Sarah Fowler said:

“At a time when our world is facing increased challenges, wetlands continue to be a real force for good. Funds raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery are invaluable to the work we do at WWT; to protect and restore wetlands, for the benefit of the wildlife that call them home and the communities they connect.

“Since 2015, player support has been vital to supporting conservation efforts at WWT reserves and project sites in both the UK and worldwide. Players support the everyday work of our incredible staff and over 900 volunteers, contributing towards a shared vision of a world where healthy wetlands thrive and enrich lives.

“As we celebrate ten years of partnership with the opening of the Estuary Shoreline project at WWT Slimbridge, we would like to thank players for their unwavering support and for recognising the superpowers of wetlands.”

Laura Chow, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said:

“It’s inspiring to see what has been achieved over the last ten years thanks to funds raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. From restoring vital habitats in the UK to supporting community-led projects abroad, their support has helped unlock the full potential of wetlands. The opening of the Estuary Shoreline project at WWT Slimbridge is a fantastic celebration of that impact, and a reminder of the powerful role wetlands play in tackling climate change, protecting wildlife and connecting people to nature.”

Designed by WWT Slimbridge’s in-house Grounds team, the Estuary Shoreline project will be buzzing with excitement this summer as a central hub for the Dragonfly Festival - an enchanting celebration packed with dragonfly-themed events, running from 21 June to 22 September.

Amid the excitement of unveiling the Estuary Shoreline project, a cake-cutting ceremony added a touch of sweetness to the celebrations, marking a milestone moment in recognition of players' support.

WWT Chief Executive, Sarah Fowler, then took the stage to reflect on the remarkable impact players of People’s Postcode Lottery continues to have in support of WWT’s mission to restore wetlands.
